Yesterday we did an etiquette class for a group of 9 Girl Scouts. They were delightful and very smart. You could tell that their parents and troop leaders are doing a great job with these young ladies. I appreciate their enthusiasm for learning the proper fork, knife and spoon to use with different foods and the proper way to behave in restaurants. It was fun.

| In honor of Black History Month, WTN Contributing Editor Lindsey Goodwin took a look at a few prominent black-owned tea businesses in the U.S. She spoke with owners about their companies, community impact, growth and goals for the next four to eight years. Here’s what they had to share.
Magnolia Spice Teas (Chicago)
Years in business: 11 Products: All-natural RTDs including four fruit and spice teas, a vanilla lemonade and four exotic fruit nectars Purpose: To mass-produce high-quality, non-carbonated beverages How she got started: Fredrick-Sowell grew tired of being a lawyer when she was pregnant with her first child. She believed she could fill a void in the beverage market with her favorite home brew. Community impact: Magnolia appeals to a wide variety of people, but there is a growing awareness of minority- and woman-owned businesses that has fueled its expansion into large distribution channels. Landmarks: Distribution with Costco, Kroger, Safeway and Wal-Mart; awards from The World Tea Expo and Tea & Coffee Trade Journal; a 4.5 star rating on BevNet Goals: To sell to more restaurants, continue to develop private label brands for major national chains and sell to tearooms Bushbaby Coffee & Tea (Brooklyn, N.Y.) President: Milton Jemmott Years in business: 3 ½ Products: Homemade “Millie’s Iced Tea,” 40 teas (including 20 house-blended varieties), coffee, vegan and non-vegan wraps and brunches, desserts Purpose: To create “the best products out there” How he got started: Jemmott used to serve his mother’s Southern iced tea at catered events. After it developed a following, he decided to open Bushbaby to sell it. Community impact: Bushbaby is in a predominantly black neighborhood, but it attracts an eclectic clientele that’s about 55 percent African American. Jemmott described it as a “community feel” with an influx of “Manhattan types.” He added that rooibos and gunpowder teas are popular amongst African Americans and African immigrants, respectively, because they feel connected to the teas’ origins. Landmarks: The 2007 NYC Small Business of the Year Award, a Visa Business Breakthrough documentary on Bushbaby Goals: To manufacture Millie’s on a large scale and sell loose teas online Urban Tea Loft (Chandler, Ariz.)
Years in business: 1 ½ Products: More than 100 loose-leaf teas, foods with and without tea as an ingredient, tea cocktails, tea soaps and lotions Purpose: To get people to try and enjoy tea in many forms How she got started: A former Fortune 25 company manager, Legrand started a journey into tea when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. She attended The World Tea Expo to learn more about tea for her own health and decided she belonged in the industry. Community impact: Legrand said African Americans make up a very small percentage of the local population, but a sizeable percentage of her clients, thanks to word of mouth and events like “Soul Food Saturdays.” Landmarks: Awards from Phoenix Magazine, participation in the 2008 Super Bowl celebrity-gifting lounge, board membership at The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health Goals: To set up Internet sales and expand to additional locations Nuborn Beverages (Santa Clara, Calif.) Founder and Owner: Kelvin Antoine Years in business: 2 Products: Organic rooibos RTDs in ginger and honey, and blue agave Purpose: To inspire young African Americans to start their own businesses How he got started: Antoine’s grandmother was an herbalist in Trindad. He was always interested in starting a beverage company, and decided to do so with rooibos. Community impact: About half of Nuborn’s customers are African Americans, and Antoine has encouraged entrepreneurship in his community through leadership. Landmarks: Distribution through a Whole Foods and several other Californian health food stores Goals: To bottle Nuborn in-house and have a positive effect on the minority youth community, including Antoine’s son and Nuborn’s president, Jamil Antoine Tea-Co Café and Lounge (Richmond, Va.)
Years in business: 2 Products: Several hundred custom rooibos blends, a variety of other teas, a small food menu Purpose: To provide health and wellness options through tea How she got started: Ceasar switched from coffee to tea when high caffeine levels presented health problems, and then built her business from there. Community impact: Ceasar said about 65 percent of the café’s clientele is African American and “there’s a strong sense of community and family. Customers can have their own events or come to our existing events and meet up with like-minded people.” Landmarks: Expansion beyond the storefront through farmers markets, county fairs and events like Richmond’s Alternative Health Expo Goals: To continue expansion through events, increase wholesale sales and open a second location in the D.C. metro area » No Comments
